Looking For A Few Good Club Members

William Shatner, best known as Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek (duh) and the more recent Boston Legal character Denny Crane, has started up a new DVD club. The club has been christened (big surprise) the William Shatner DVD Club (www.ShatnerDvdClub.com). The club “showcases the best sci-fi movies that didn’t come to a theater near you. ”

Huh? Shatner explains, "Determining what movies get broad distribution and studio marketing support is a complicated process, and unfortunately the caliber of the film isn’t the only consideration. I’ve chosen a select group of memorable and entertaining sci-fi movies that never got the exposure they deserved, and made them available to fans everywhere at a great price.”

Sweet. Believe it or not, I actually think this is a great idea. There are so many excellent SF movies that come out every year that slide by the public. I’ve actually made it a hobby of buying DVDs of lesser known foreign SF films like “Brotherhood of the Wolf” and “The Returner” (two very different but very excellent movies by the way), so it comes to no surprise that I already have some the movie listed in the club. But do you?

Right now, new members get the werewolf movie “Ginger Snaps” for free. Others movies that members will get with membership are “Close Your Eyes” and “Immortal.” So, if your interested in checking out lesser known SF movies for a reasonable price, then check out Shatner’s new DVD club.
